Interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues eight multi-colored special postage stamps with pictures of interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR. Interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR 5-pfennig value: Ararauna, Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg The Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg was founded in 1950 in the Vogelgesangpark as a Heimattiergarten. Only nine years later, the development of the zoological garden was determined by council decision. The z.Zt. used terrain has a size of 12 ha, another 13 ha are available as expansion area. In 1967, with the opening of the first pachyderm house for elephants, rhinos and hippos, built in the GDR, the first major project planned in the Perspective Plan was realized. The annual attendance increased from 80,000 in 1950 to over 450,000 in 1974. There are more than 1,000 animals cared for in 280 species. Special specialties are the keeping and breeding of small cats (six species, including the lynx, which is also the symbol of Magdeburg zoo), Shetland ponies and parrots. The largest breeding success of the rich parrot collection is the first breeding of the yellow-blue Araraunas in 1966 in the GDR.
